Science and Traditional Therapy
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in fruits and
vegetables and the marigold flower. They are the physiological macular pigments
found in our eyes. They function as antioxidant agents, protecting our eyes
from free radical damage caused by blue light and the sun’s UV rays. Numerous
peer-reviewed clinical trials and scientific studies support their importance
for the health of our eyes and supporting our vision. Lutein and zeaxanthin
supplementation may reduce the risk of cataract and AMD development and slow
progression of advanced AMD.
In 2012, Nolan et al reported that daily consumption of 12 mg of lutein and 1 mg of zeaxanthin by healthy participants (Total Vision CareTM Professional has 20 mg of lutein and 2.5 mg of zeaxanthin), significantly improved the participants’ visual acuity under high glare situations and improved their ability to adapt their vision in light/dark situations. Macular pigment was significantly increased after consumption of lutein and zeaxanthin for 12 months.
Alpha Lipoic Acid (LA) is a potent antioxidant that may protect the lens and the retina from free radical damage and reduce the risk of cataract development. LA enhances the recycling of vitamin C and vitamin E. As the levels of vitamins C and E increase, the utilization of GSH in the tissues is reduced – effectively raising GSH levels.
In 1994 Packer examined the relationship between LA, GSH and cataracts. LA reduced the incidence of cataract development from oxidant stress from 100% to 40%. Under oxidant stress the GSH content in the cataract lenses was reduced to 50% of control. However in the presence of LA, GSH, vitamin E, and vitamin C levels were restored to near control levels.
- Citrus Bioflavonoids are polyphenolic compounds derived from fruits high in vitamin C. These polyphenolic compounds may act synergistically with vitamin C to neutralize free radicals and reduce our risk of developing cataracts and AMD.
- Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin with powerful antioxidant properties. It is abundant in the cornea of our eyes. Clinical evidence suggests that long-term consumption of vitamin C (with vitamin E, b-carotene and zinc) may reduce the risk of cataract and AMD formation and slow progression of AMD by 20-25% and the loss of visual acuity by 19%. A 64%-77% reduction in the development of nuclear cataracts was reported in women taking vitamin C for more than 10 years.
- Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin with potent antioxidant activity. It increases the stability of vitamin A. Several peer reviewed clinical trials suggest that it may reduce the risk of progression of cataracts and AMD.
- Vitamin A is an essential fat-soluble vitamin with potent antioxidant properties. It is required for both low-light and colour vision. Vitamin A deficiency may cause night blindness and dry eyes.
- Zinc is an essential mineral that may protect the lens from oxidative damage and helps the body absorb vitamin A. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) by the National Eye Institute, USA and a systematic review of several other clinical trials, suggests that a combination of zinc, b-carotene and vitamins C and E may be effective in slowing progression to advanced AMD by 20-25% and reducing the risk of developing cataracts.

Fish oils are rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) omega-3 fatty acids. DHA is abundant in the retina of the human eye, particularly in the photoreceptors. DHA and EPA are essential for ocular development and retinal function.
In 2013, the AREDS2 multicentre (n=4203), randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled phase 3 study (2006-2012) reported that dietary supplementation with lutein (10 mg), zeaxanthin (2 mg) and omega-3 fatty acids (DHA, 350 mg; EPA, 650 mg), particularly in people with low levels of dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthin may slow the progression of advanced AMD by 20-25%.
Lutein and DHA are essential for not just eye health but also for cognitive function. Johnson et al (2008) reported that adults (60-80 years old) who received 800 mg/day DHA and 12 mg/day lutein, had significantly improved verbal fluency, memory and efficiency and rate of learning scores compared to those who received a placebo, only DHA or only lutein. Renzi et al (2014) reported similar findings and found that macular pigment density was broadly related to cognitive ability.
